HSI Portfolio Review Request Policy

High School Intensive (HSI) HSI Portfolio Review Request Form Policy

Revised 8/2/19

Students may not “opt out” of the HSI program once they have been identified as needing additional support, however, some modifications may be made to meet the needs of the student if necessary. Students should be encouraged and supported to participate in the Base Module Program with additional supports provided if needed.  Other options are limited to students upon approval.

Students needing additional services such as live instruction, tutoring sessions, remediation, intensive interventions or additional practice are not considered modifications needing approval through this process. This is additional support that should be arranged for the student by the ES.

HSI Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 (Math)

HSI math coursework can be completed in one of three ways.

1: HSI Base Module Program -  Students will continue with the online modules under the direction of the HSI EE. No modifications are needed.  Students will continue to earn 1 credit per module completed.  Please see ES Responsibilities below.

2: If Needed HSI Module Modification -  HSI Instructors may modify the module program to reduce some of the online requirements. ES would work with the instructor for approved module modifications. The student would complete module quizzes online or via paper/pencil under the direction of the HSI EE.  Please see ES Responsibilities below.

3: By Approval Only Portfolio Review - The ES may propose another state adopted curriculum for the student to use following the Algebra policy. These students will remain on the EEs HSI class roster and will complete a portfolio review with the HSI instructor.  ES will complete the HSI Portfolio Review Request Form.

ESs are required to complete this form for any student they wish to request HSI modifications for.  Once modifications requests have been approved, ESs will be notified via email.  Complete this form for each student (one per subject) requesting modifications.

As soon as the Specialist has approved your request, you will receive an email and you may notify your student. Please do NOT notify your parent/student that your plan has been approved until you receive the confirmation email.   You are required to continue to meet the ES Responsibilities outlined in the HSI Policy, the HSI Policy Addendum, and the HSI Course Syllabus as applicable throughout the semester regardless of what modifications have been approved.

HSI Algebra 1:

  • Student works in either a state adopted Algebra 1 or Math 1 curriculum and completes a portfolio review with HSI EE, OR
  • Student works in non-state adopted Algebra 1 or Math 1 curriculum approved by the Math Specialist in addition to completing a CWCS approved Concepts and Skills workbook and completes a portfolio review with the HSI EE
  • Please see ES Responsibilities below.

HSI Pre-Algebra:

  • Student works in either a state adopted Math 8 curriculum and completes a portfolio review with HSI EE, OR
  • Student works in non-state adopted Math 8 curriculum approved by the Math Specialist in addition to completing a CWCS approved Concepts and Skills workbook and completes a portfolio review with the HSI EE
  • Please see ES Responsibilities below.  ES will also be responsible for facilitating the completion and submission of student portfolio.

HSI Composition (ELA: Writing)

HSI composition coursework can be completed in one of three ways.

1: HSI Base Module Program -  Students may continue with the online modules under the direction of the HSI EE. No modifications are needed.  Students will continue to earn 2.5 credits per module completed.  Please see ES Responsibilities below.

2: If Needed HSI Module Modification -  HSI Instructors may modify the module program to reduce some of the online requirements. ES would work with the instructor for approved modifications.  Please see ES Responsibilities below.

3: By Approval Only Portfolio Review -  The ES may propose another research based writing curriculum for the student to use to complete an intensive Composition Course for 5 credits/semester (Note: improving writing skills for all writing genres is the main focus in the HSI ELA program. Most English classes are balanced to include coverage of all standards and are not focused on intensive writing skills).

  • Student works in either a research based writing curriculum and completes a portfolio review with HSI EE, Or
  • Student works in non-research based curriculum (i.e.: writing plan developed by parent or ES) approved by the English Specialist in addition to completing the CWCS approved Concepts and Skills workbook Common Core Coach for Composition I and completes a portfolio review with the HSI EE
  • Please see ES Responsibilities below.

ES Responsibilities:

  • Notify instructors immediately if they have concerns about a student struggling in the program.
  • Ensure student has watched the Orientation Video (found on the student’s home page of their class in Moodle). ES must also make sure the student knows how to log in and maneuver through the program.
  • Ensure students have additional supports needed to be successful in the program (i.e.: appropriate pacing guides, live or online tutoring sessions, additional practice, motivational “check-ins”, etc.).
  • Carefully monitor student’s progress in the program to ensure students are actively engaged* on a regular basis.
  • Complete HSI Portfolio Review Request Form for any student requesting modifications outside the asynchronous course model
  • Check HSI syllabus for additional responsibilities (found on the Moodle Home Page).

*Actively engaged means the student is logging in to their course daily to participate in the activities, watch the videos and attempt the independent practice.  Encourage students to let you or the instructor know immediately if they are unsure of how to continue to the next lesson, next steps, or if they are not able to complete the practice.  ESs should work with struggling students on self-advocacy strategies.
